Used Truck Buying Guide
Buying a used pickup: cab and bed configuration, towing, frame condition and what to inspect.
Configuration first
Cab size and bed length change what the truck can actually do for you. A crew cab with a short bed is a family vehicle that hauls; a regular cab with a long bed is a work truck.
If it's been worked
Look at the frame and underbody for rust and bends, check the hitch and wiring for heavy towing wear, and inspect the bed for damage. A worked truck is not a bad truck, but it should be priced like one.
Running costs
Fuel, tires and insurance are all higher on trucks. Factor that into the monthly number before you commit.
