Used Car Test Drive Checklist
What to actually do on a used car test drive so you find problems before you buy.
Before you move
Sit in it for a minute. Adjust the seat and mirrors — if you can't get comfortable now, you won't in six months. Start it and listen. Check the dash for warning lights.
On the drive
Drive with the radio off. Get it up to highway speed if you can. Brake firmly in a safe spot. Turn the wheel lock to lock at low speed listening for noise. Go over a rough patch of road and listen to the suspension.
After
Park, leave it running, and walk around looking and listening. Then ask your questions while it's fresh. Book a time so the vehicle is plated and ready to drive when you arrive.
